You will notice as you continue with your practice the poses will be easier to slip into and you will be able to incorporate more advanced poses into your workout.  Many people stop after the poses and don't finish their practice with relaxation and meditation.  This is a very important part of a yoga practice.  This allows the body to rejuvenate from the workout making your workout most productive.  Also it is nature's tranquillizer and tunes and trains the mind providing efficiency in everyday living.  It will quiet any restlessness of the mind and bring awareness to deep seeded tensions.  It will keep you in the moment taking away stress, anxiety, worry and depression.

Before you get started on Asasnas you will want to be prepared, here are some tips.

Preparation for your yoga practice:
  • Wait 4 hours after a heavy meal or 2 hours after light snack
  • Wear loose fitting clothes
  • Work on a mat or non-slip floor
  • Have necessary props in reach such as blocks, straps and bolsters
  • Remove contact lenses
  • Clear you mind and stay in the moment

What is Yoga?

Yoga originated in ancient India and was not a exercise program but rather a way of life, a lifestyle that brought "union" to the body, mind, and soul.  Ashtanga yoga consists of  and covers every aspect of your being.  Yoga as most people know it covers only two of the limbs Asanas (physical poses) and Pranayama (breathing) and are usually what you will find being taught in classes.  These two limbs bring strength, focus, and flexibility to the body and mind allowing you to heal and revive.  Our favorite DVD for beginners is Rodney Yee's Yoga for Beginners.

Intermediate and Advanced Yogis and Yoginis!

Don't worry we haven't forgot about you.  Since we started off with Rodney Yee we are going to continue with him since he is in our opinion one of the best.  There are however many other teachers out there that are wonderful so feel free to shop around or send us an email and we will be glad to send some suggestions.  This is a great DVD for the Intermediate level and if you click the link there are many Advanced DVD's on the site.
